Charity Conference: “Do you Know Forced Marriage is a Crime?”

A charity conference to campaign against Forced Marriages. A public event for the community, students and professional experts in the field – this event attracted around 50 people to help  understand in depth the matter of Forced Marriages and the great risks it imposes on individuals. Attendees and guests were given the opportunity to learn and discuss what creates such a union and what can be done to help those under threat.

The event was funded by CDF and hosted on Thursday the 26th of March 2015 at The University of Bedfordshire, Luton Campus, University Square, Luton, Bedfordshire, LU1 3JU. It was held from 11:00am – 05:00pm. Refreshments and catering were provided, invitees greeted on arrival by a registration team to ensure they were registered, fed and seated accordingly.  It was an open conference and welcomed all to participate, learn and raise awareness on Forced Marriages. Experts on the matter attended to impart their knowledge and discuss with the public their views and any inquiries people may have had. Notable the event had 80% less attendee than expected, no local councillor attend the event despite charity sending them several invitation, it was mentioned that no councillor responded to any of them invitation.

The conference was opened by Miss Monju, with key speakers sharing their experiences throughout the day via presentations; Mamunul Islam, Barrister Miss Lynne Towlney, Dr Nazia Khanum OBE of Independent Consultancy, Equality and Diversity, Parliament’s Lord Ahmed, and Neil Day. They were all essential in providing knowledge to the audience about Forced Marriages, and how individuals can help when faced with it or know someone in such a situation. Chair Ranjula Tadokara MBE also attended, emphasising the great risk of Forced Marriages, and the importance of raising awareness about globally. It was a well-received event, with active and vocal audience members widely sharing their views and queries with experts, allowing a steady flow of discussion to come through.

Save Your Rights aims to help raise awareness on the subject of Forced Marriages, an unfortunate circumstance many individuals endure on a daily basis. In line with the Governments Forced Marriage Unit (FMU), research shows that the case of individuals suffering from this injustice is of 250 – 300 predicaments a year. Forced Marriage is a serious issue and a crime that is on up rise, often going unnoticed in society. However, as a community, it can be noticed, and those suffering can be given help, helping to save and or repair the damages to individuals and their families.
